Sauna rocks break down with heat cycling and moisture over time. Inspect them when you change your heating element, and swap out any that are cracked, crumbling, or coated in mineral buildup from hard water. Most home saunas need a full refresh every 1 to 2 years of regular use.
Rinse the rocks to clear dust before loading. Set the larger stones at the bottom of the heater and the smaller ones on top, leaving room for air to move freely, packing them too tight cuts down how long your element lasts. Full guidance is in your heater's manual.
